How to Get Cheap Medical Care, Even Without Insurance
March 7, 2024
New options for low-cost health care
Traditional health insurance — the kind most employers offer to workers — is more expensive than ever. But if you need to see a clinician quickly and you’re paying cash, price-sensitive patients can now get a consult for the cost of a haircut, or less.
You can book a visit on Sesame, a marketplace for medical providers to list their services, for under $50 and as low as $29 with a Costco membership. The company say it’s done more than a million visits since 2019. A site called Dr. B, which started to match patients with Covid vaccine doses when they were scarce, now offers online chat-based consults for $15. It uses automation to handle patients’ initial queries before they’re reviewed by clinicians. Amazon Clinic advertises $29 virtual visits. Meanwhile, Walmart Health clinics offer in-person visits in several states, with cash rates for many services at $100 or less.
